After watching Christophe Lemaire's, spring-summer 2013 video presentation, I have been left completely and utterly inspired.

ping pong

What we know as ping pong, Berliners call tisch tennis. It's commonly played with friends in concrete playgrounds, on nearly every corner here. I have become a regular spectator of not only the sport but also the website ping-pong; an exchange of photos between Ana Kras and Sylvain Emmanuel. A series of photos, one by him, the next by her. It's a truly interesting game to follow...

This time last year Sherie Muijs hosted a Sunday brunch, enjoying together with friends, photographers, stylists and writers, a Day Of Rest. Thank you to those who joined us and for the hands that helped put on such a delicious and beautiful spread!

cheap chic

I am a firm believer in creating a wardrobe that is filled with everyday sartorial building blocks - a woolen blazer, a chunky ribbed sweater, a classic white shirt, a blue shirt - and it is my hope that over time I will continue to come back to these old faithfuls, like a loyal friend.

A recent discovery is a collectors hand book published in the mid-to-late 70's, Cheap Chic written by Caterine Milinaire and Carol Troy - advising on what its title promises, giving practical tips on how to hunt out the best from army surplus and vintage shops while also featuring black-and-white images of Lauren Hutton looking effortlessly cool in jeans, a knotted sweater and sneakers.

"The basic concept of Cheap Chic for both men and women is to have a few clothes that you really love rather than a closet full of mismatched fashions. Paring down your wardrobe is going to simplify your life and looking good is going to make you feel good. Find the clothes that suit you best, that make you feel comfortable, confident, sexy, attractive and happy... and then hang onto them like old friends".

richer soil

The seeds planted in spring are finally starting to sprout in my new environment. I have given life a good prune to allow for new life and fresh perspectives to grow. A process that naturally has it's challenges. Finding this quote was exactly what I needed to read this morning.

There are, forever, buildings to be made, music to be composed, art to be created, clothes to be designed and photographs to be taken. But high speed can make for wrong turns, and short cuts can come out in the wrong place. Inspiring are those who break free to find a richer soil, in which to create.

a shirts tale

To give and to receive.

The satisfaction of giving and the pleasure in receiving. We're nearing the end of the year and Christmas will soon be upon us. Today in the studio with fellow creative minds, we thought how lovely it would be to receive fabrics, sent to us from around the world, each bringing with it a unique story.

Perhaps you're someone who collects off-cuts from flea markets or have a collection of Grandma's remnants stored away?

We would like to invite you to send us a piece of your fabric and with it a story, image or poem, telling us a little something about where it comes from and why it's special to you. We will then use the collection of fabrics we receive to create our staple shirt [No.1] and make them available for purchase in our online store www.sheriemuijs.com. These one-off shirts will be handmade in Berlin and available in sizes XS - L, retailing for $290 NZD (€175).

Should you wish to participate, here are the project requirements:

1. Send us 2.0m of fabric, suitable for a shirt. Only natural fabrics will be used [Ie, silk, cotton, linen]
2. Write us a story, a poem or send a picture, explaining where the fabric comes from and why it is special to you
3. If you wish to purchase the shirt made in your particular fabric, this can be requested and secured with a 30% deposit and a 10% discount off the retail price
4. Fabric must be sent before October 18th

Please e-mail projects@sheriemuijs.com for more details on where and how to send your fabric. We look forward to receiving your packages and to hearing your stories!

on wild at heart

Honoured to have been interviewed on Wild At Heart and would like to thank Zoe for having me. Read the full interview over on wildatheart.com.au

Where did you grow up and how did that shape your formative years stylistically?

I grew up in the suburbs of Auckland, New Zealand. My family home is a beautiful three-storey villa, my parents have been renovating since the day I was born. My childhood was picture-perfect; Golden Labrador, rose gardens, white picket fence, the youngest of three girls.

I grew up to appreciate a love for interiors, fresh flowers, friends and entertaining. My fondest childhood memories are of my family on our summer holidays at the lake and aspire to own my own lake house, with a pier and surrounding trees someday.

Tell us about the other places you've lived and those you've visited that have stuck with you, how are they reflected in your aesthetic and creative sensibilities?

I have lived in Amsterdam, where my fathers’ family is originally from, studying Design and Styling at the time. My peers were incredibly creative. They worked hard, and played hard. I admired them for the confidence they executed in their work and in the language they would use to describe it. So, although only 6 months this was a pivotal move, leaving me inspired and challenged to connect to my work in a new way.

I have been influenced by European style, culture and history after traveling through Belgium, France, Spain, Switzerland and Germany, and fallen in love with California after visiting Los Angeles last year.

I've been doing a lot of thinking and not a lot of sharing, gradually refining concepts of my potential. Based in Berlin, in a new studio, finding new factories, new suppliers, and surrounded by an unknown world of opportunity. Inspired by the people I interact with on this journey, I am starting a series of projects. Working garments. Intellectually designed. Beautifully functional.

travel tips [spain with jessica comingore, part one]

It has been over three months since my visit to Spain; Madrid being our final destination, leaving us with a lasting impression. The incredibly talented and lovely Jessica Comingore, {whom I was fortunate enough to meet while passing through Los Angeles}, left me with an extensive list of sights to see and hidden away places to eat while traveling through Spain.

My highlight from this list is easy. Olivia te Cuida -- The menu was overwhelmingly delicious-looking so left it to the chef to serve a selection of her favourites, while I sat inspired. Inspired by its simple yet unique decor and the oozing coolness and calm from the other diners packed into this tiny slice of heaven.

MADRID

See
1. Circulo de Bellas Artes - Get a ticket to the rooftop to see some of the most incredible panoramic views of the city. Don't forget your camera!
2. Museo del Prado - The grounds are as beautiful as the work inside and you can easily spend a day slowly wandering through its corridors.
3. Museo Reina Sofia - This museum was hands-down my favorite with work from many incredible contemporary artists. The central gardens are also the perfect place to relax and people watch.

Eat
1. Mercado de San Miguel - My friend took me here on my first night in Madrid for tapas and a glass of Ribera and I was hooked. I think I went back at least three more times, each time trying something different from the vast selection of vendors.
2. Olivia te Cuida - I feel like this restaurant was taken directly out of my dreams. Only enough room for a few, and only serving lunch M-F, your best bet would be to make a reservation, and come hungry. They work with the freshest ingredients in the most unique ways I've ever tasted.
3. Junk Club - Underneath the notable La Musa Latina restaurant, you need a password to enter in to this cozy eatery with the coolest and quirkiest decor in town.

Visit/Shop
1. The Rastro Flea Market - I spent my last day in Madrid wanderng around this expansive flea market, picking up everything from leather backpacks to 19th century oil paintings. It's got something for everyone.
2. Parque del Retriro - Let yourself get lost through the paths of this park, through the rose gardens, past the lake and ending at the Palacio de Cristal — an absolute sight to be seen.
3. Plaza Mayor - This is the center of Madrid and the most beautiful at night when the crowds have died down a bit, and your path is guided only by the glow of the street lamps.
