My dear friend Natalie Smith sent myself and the girls a link to a film onNatasha Khan of Bat for Lashes. This was some months a go and I am only sitting with this now. Perhaps for me, it's perfect timing.

"I think, sometimes the past can be something you carry without realizing it, and it may be that in order to move forward you have to make peace with the past".

"I think it's really important to follow your gut instincts and your heart when you're on the brink of making something, because if you become too pragmatic in your mind about things, I think you can often kill the playful and inquistic energy that it takes to make something interesting."

"As I go on I realize that in order to be a happy person I need to combine the dark and the light, and integrate them so that I feel like a whole person so that I'm not just one aspect, I'm not one extreme."

"I don't know where I'm going to go from here, I think you can only really be in the moment because I know, if I think a few years ahead it is really terrifying. I just hope that I can continue to make innovative and interesting work for me, that makes me happy and hopefully people really enjoy it."

In need of fresh air and inspiration, I stumbled across a walk I visited most days when I was a girl. Back then it was so routine, with my dog Chelsea in tow, I don't think I ever really appreciated it for its beauty, until now. Situated quietly between family residence, this densely packed community of trees, birds, creeks and waterfalls, is somewhere I will treasure forever.

travel tips [spain with jessica comingore, part two]

After traveling through France with friends, Jiwan and I began our Spanish journey in Barcelona, capital of Catalonia. I was amazed by Gaudi's distinctive architecture, Pablo Picasso's history from his life there and the lobster risotto which was out of this world.
Following on from Jessica Comingore's travel tips for Madrid, here are her recommendations for Barcelona.

BARCELONA

See
1. MACBA - Contemporary art heaven in a building designed by Richard Meyer — need I say more? Make sure to pop in to the gift shop to pick up a few obscure art books.
2. Museu Picasso  - This place gets crowded on the weekends, but it's well worth the wait. It houses Picasso's works from age 18 to his passing and witnessing the progression is incredibly inspiring.
3. La Sagrada Familia - Grab a seat, look up and let your jaw drop. Like nothing I've ever seen.

Eat
1. 4Gats - I grabbed a table for one at this restaurant after my visit to Museu Picasso as I heard this was his favorite hangout when he lived in Barcelona. Sit back with a glass of wine and their lobster risotto, and let the afternoon linger.
2. La Boqueria - The energy you feel walking in to this market is quintessential Spain. It's in the more touristy area of Barcelona, La Rambla de Sant Josep, so make sure to hang tight to your belongings.
3. Woki Organic Market - Perhaps not the most authentic Spanish cuisine, but this market had great branding (as did many of the restaurants in Barcelona) and was an interesting restaurant/market hybrid, carrying cuisine from all over the globe.

Visit/Shop
1. Ese Ese - Women in Spain always look incredibly chic and completely effortless at the same time, and this boutique very much captures that vibe.
2. Mercat Gotic - Every Thursday a few tables are set up in the Gothic Quarter for vendors to sell their antique wares. Old cameras, silverware, artwork, you name it.
3. Port Vell - A walk along the marina at dusk is beautiful.

Our next stop is Granada, which I cannot wait to share with you!

I was unlucky once. I was given an unexpected gift.Unexpected but in no way unwanted. Then, it was taken away, taking with it the life of me.Moving abroad was initially a motion (or in emotion) to runaway and to hide.Time heals though. And love heals for sure.
I am still moving abroad, but now to explore and to find.I will miss my dear family and friends greatly and just wish I could persuade them all to come with. I will have with me my most dearest companion though and this makes me very happy! He too is on his journey.

Sherie Muijs shirts will continue. I'm simply relocating, designing, sampling and administrating from abroad.I truly love what I do and wouldn't trade places with anyone.

I'm the luckiest girl alive.

My carry on luggage had only the bare essentials as there is nothing worse that being weighed down with too much s%*#. I couldn't have done without my Herringbone Coat from my AW11 collection, Gin & Tonic, Pawpaw lip-balm, Possum-Merino-Silk Sweater from Penny Sage and those small packets of Kleenex tissues. I have safely arrived in Germany and quickly settling into our new little apartment in Berlin!

friday finds

"Friday finds" might seem a touch misleading as most of you will be seeing this post as you awake to your Saturday morning. But as timezones would have it, this is my Friday afternoon and these are my Friday finds.

In this time of change, I have stumbled across a host of new discoveries, links and insights into inspiring people, boutiques and interesting reads from various corners of the world.

Let me start by sharing with you a beautiful photographer and her beautiful photographs, Hanna Putz. Found via Anyone, Girl.

And while perusing the pages of Anyone, Girl be sure to check out the online store and boutique - Maryam Nassir Zadeh. The sites clean lines and attention to detail is reflected in their collections, sitting perfectly alongside brands such as Damir Doma, Ten and Cosmic Wonder to name a few.

The artist Camille Henrot has captured my attention of late. Best known for her videos, Henrot explores a range of medias including: sculpture, drawing, photography and most prominently, film.

I was sent a link recently, to a site boasting a comprehensive list of books that should be read in ones twenties. See here. Of the 65 books listed, I have read none, bar one {Just Kids by Patti Smith, which I agree is a must-read}. I am currently 27 {and a half} which leaves me 29 months to read the remaining 64 books!

And finally, though not technically todays find, I have to share with you my new local cafe - Ungeheuer. After two weeks of living in the German capital, this little gem still has me captured.

If it's at all possible, I hold Patti in even higher regard, after having seen her live in concert. In the flesh, her hair out, later plaited during April Fool. Wearing an Ann D waistcoat and blazer, ripped jeans and a vintage tee. Her poetry, her hand gestures, her loving waves and gentle smiles. Perfection.

What we know as ping pong, Berliners call tisch tennis. It's commonly played with friends in concrete playgrounds, on nearly every corner here. I have become a regular spectator of not only the sport but also the website ping-pong; an exchange of photos between Ana Kras and Sylvain Emmanuel. A series of photos, one by him, the next by her. It's a truly interesting game to follow...

cheap chic

I am a firm believer in creating a wardrobe that is filled with everyday sartorial building blocks - a woolen blazer, a chunky ribbed sweater, a classic white shirt, a blue shirt - and it is my hope that over time I will continue to come back to these old faithfuls, like a loyal friend.

A recent discovery is a collectors hand book published in the mid-to-late 70's, Cheap Chic written by Caterine Milinaire and Carol Troy - advising on what its title promises, giving practical tips on how to hunt out the best from army surplus and vintage shops while also featuring black-and-white images of Lauren Hutton looking effortlessly cool in jeans, a knotted sweater and sneakers.

"The basic concept of Cheap Chic for both men and women is to have a few clothes that you really love rather than a closet full of mismatched fashions. Paring down your wardrobe is going to simplify your life and looking good is going to make you feel good. Find the clothes that suit you best, that make you feel comfortable, confident, sexy, attractive and happy... and then hang onto them like old friends".

richer soil

The seeds planted in spring are finally starting to sprout in my new environment. I have given life a good prune to allow for new life and fresh perspectives to grow. A process that naturally has it's challenges. Finding this quote was exactly what I needed to read this morning.

There are, forever, buildings to be made, music to be composed, art to be created, clothes to be designed and photographs to be taken. But high speed can make for wrong turns, and short cuts can come out in the wrong place. Inspiring are those who break free to find a richer soil, in which to create.

a shirts tale

To give and to receive.

The satisfaction of giving and the pleasure in receiving. We're nearing the end of the year and Christmas will soon be upon us. Today in the studio with fellow creative minds, we thought how lovely it would be to receive fabrics, sent to us from around the world, each bringing with it a unique story.

Perhaps you're someone who collects off-cuts from flea markets or have a collection of Grandma's remnants stored away?

We would like to invite you to send us a piece of your fabric and with it a story, image or poem, telling us a little something about where it comes from and why it's special to you. We will then use the collection of fabrics we receive to create our staple shirt [No.1] and make them available for purchase in our online store www.sheriemuijs.com. These one-off shirts will be handmade in Berlin and available in sizes XS - L, retailing for $290 NZD (€175).

Should you wish to participate, here are the project requirements:

1. Send us 2.0m of fabric, suitable for a shirt. Only natural fabrics will be used [Ie, silk, cotton, linen]
2. Write us a story, a poem or send a picture, explaining where the fabric comes from and why it is special to you
3. If you wish to purchase the shirt made in your particular fabric, this can be requested and secured with a 30% deposit and a 10% discount off the retail price
4. Fabric must be sent before October 18th

Please e-mail projects@sheriemuijs.com for more details on where and how to send your fabric. We look forward to receiving your packages and to hearing your stories!

on wild at heart

Honoured to have been interviewed on Wild At Heart and would like to thank Zoe for having me. Read the full interview over on wildatheart.com.au

Where did you grow up and how did that shape your formative years stylistically?

I grew up in the suburbs of Auckland, New Zealand. My family home is a beautiful three-storey villa, my parents have been renovating since the day I was born. My childhood was picture-perfect; Golden Labrador, rose gardens, white picket fence, the youngest of three girls.

I grew up to appreciate a love for interiors, fresh flowers, friends and entertaining. My fondest childhood memories are of my family on our summer holidays at the lake and aspire to own my own lake house, with a pier and surrounding trees someday.

Tell us about the other places you've lived and those you've visited that have stuck with you, how are they reflected in your aesthetic and creative sensibilities?

I have lived in Amsterdam, where my fathers’ family is originally from, studying Design and Styling at the time. My peers were incredibly creative. They worked hard, and played hard. I admired them for the confidence they executed in their work and in the language they would use to describe it. So, although only 6 months this was a pivotal move, leaving me inspired and challenged to connect to my work in a new way.

I have been influenced by European style, culture and history after traveling through Belgium, France, Spain, Switzerland and Germany, and fallen in love with California after visiting Los Angeles last year.
